The Beginning

A sailing group spurred on by Cindy Hallmark, is in the throes of organization on San Juan Island (1979). A steering committee led by Cindy, Fred Krabbee, Rob Moore and Fred Stevens is working on the problems of the directions such a group would take and the decisions that need to be made in the early stages of formation.
There is definitely interest in the idea of such a club. About 40 persons showed up last week for a preliminary meeting and the group will meet again Tuesday, April 10th, 1979, possibly in the ‘Turnagain’ at 7:30 pm. The steering committee will have questionnaires for all interested sailors regarding preferences in the groups formation. Racing, cruising, youth programs are all being considered and the more input from sailors, the better the decisions will be.

One of the charms of living in the islands is a slower pace, an escape from the cities and frenetic activities that become less meaningful as they become compounded. However one new organizer stated, “therefore I was personally disappointed with the direction of the newly founded “Friday Harbor Sailing Club” decided to go last week.
A great group of enthusiastic sailors have enthusiastically willed themselves into the beginnings of an organized organization with goals, by-laws, dues and meetings. I hope they reach their fine objectives — the group has just become more stuctured than I want to be — but they certainly have my support in what they do”. However, these comments were not alone, in visiting with some other sailing friends around the docks I find I am not alone, so the Last Real Sailing Club with no rules, no dues, let’s cruise, may gain a few non-members at that.
